WHY AN ALLERGIST?

An Allergist is a specialist who treats allergies.

Allergies arise when our body's defensive system reacts adversely to molds, ragweed and other things. These reactions (which occur in approximately 1/3 of the population), can cause symptoms such as runny nose, itchy eyes, sneezing, coughing, and skin rashes. Allergic reactions can lead to such disorders as sinusitis, asthma, hay fever, food and drug allergies, stinging insect reactions, allergic rashes, and hives. These conditions are best treated by an Allergist.

The Allergist is a physician trained in a basic specialty, and then completed a second training period, usually two years or longer, in allergic disease diagnosis and treatment. This results in board certification by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology. While any physician may treat allergies, a trained Board-Certified Allergist/ Immunologist is an expert on allergies and the best tools and techniques to use in the treatment of allergies.

VIRGINIA ADULT & PEDIATRIC ALLERGY & ASTHMA is proud of our providers, both our physicians and midlevel providers. All physicians are board certified in Allergy and Immunology and one other discipline, such as Internal Medicine or Pediatrics. Our providers work to maintain a current, state-of-the-art knowledge of allergy and immunology by attending classes and seminars and participating in clinical research studies sponsored by major pharmaceutical companies. Our midlevel providers are also certified asthma educators. VAPA providers participate as part-time faculty members at area college programs, and are frequently asked to present relevant topics to physician groups both locally and nationally, and to participate as guest lecturers at seminars sponsored by professional societies, pharmaceutical companies, and academic institutions. VAPA providers also contribute extensively to professional and educational journals regarding new trends in the delivery of allergy, immunology, and asthma care.
