Influenza is a common virus causing significant illness during the winter months. Below is a list of symptoms associated with the common cold and flu. (The flu is NOT the “stomach flu”, which is actually gastroenteritis, or inflammation of the stomach and GI tract). Influenza, which is highly contagious, is spread through air droplets from coughing. There are currently three antiviral medications that may reduce the severity and the length of influenza. They must be taken by individuals who are at risk for developing flu in the very near future, or who have just developed symptoms. These drugs are ineffective if symptoms have been present more than 48 hours. However, the best way to treat the flu is to prevent it with a flu shot every fall. The influenza virus changes (mutates) every year so a flu shot is needed each year, usually in October or November.
